Make Your Own Dog Coat

Make your own dog coat using a unique design template by Ruth Morrison of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Although her instructions are for making a dog coat using weaving techniques, the template can be adapted for any kind of fabric you want to use.

Here's how we made a raincoat for Comet with only a couple of modifications to the template.

To access the instructions to make your own dog coat, click here then follow the directions below:

  • Under Weaving Projects and Articles, go to
  • Looking for other projects or articles from Handwoven?
  • then click on Projects on: 5 to 8 Shafts
  • and finally Canine Couture
  • The template is all the way at the bottom

If you're unsure about how to adapt the pattern to your dog, use an old sheet (or cloth remnant) to practice with first.

When you have the size and shape you want, pin the practice piece to your fabric. Cut around it. Leave room for edging or seams if these are needed.

The best part of this design is that the velcro fasteners make it easy to put this coat on and off your dog.
